British electric scooter law

Because the electric scooter is driven by a motor (electric), it is classified as a mechanical propulsion vehicle by the Ministry of Communications and is therefore classified as a motor vehicle.

Motor vehicles with less than four wheels and less than 410 kg are classified as motorcycles. This is stipulated in Article 185 of the Road Traffic Act of 1988. They eventually became a sub-category of mopeds because of their low speed.

So in the law of British electric scooters, your scooter is classified as a moped.

In order for electric scooters to be legally used for road use in the UK, they must comply with building codes and must be formally registered.

Before you buy any electric scooter for road use, make sure the seller will give you a valid certificate of competency.

According to Article 72 of the Highway Act of 1835, driving a vehicle on a sidewalk is a crime.
