Learn to Drive in Portugal

The minimum legal age for driving a motor vehicle or motorcycle beyond 50cc is 18 years.

For motorcycles or mopeds less than 50cc, the minimum age is 16.

Anyone under 18 years of age is required to get a written authorization from the guardian to get a driving license.

Drivers and passengers on motorcycles and motorcycles must wear safety helmets.

Like other European countries, the driving license (or passport without a photo holder), vehicle registration documents and insurance documents must be carried at any time.

Portugal allows only 0.5 grams of alcohol per litre of blood and beverages - driving will be fined or sentenced to imprisonment for punishing more serious crimes.

The driving test is established by the General Administration of Communications (IMTT) and is tested by the Centros de Exames. The examination center (Centros de Exames) is issued by public or private institutions and certified by the traffic authority. Candidates must choose examination centres in their residential areas.

To apply for a driving license, first register at DGV and Escola deCondu o. If certain criteria are met, the basic driving practice can start at the age of 16; driving schools will provide information.

Driving test is divided into two parts: theoretical examination and practical examination. Internships must be carried out in the same examination center where candidates pass the theoretical examination unless they are able to prove permanent changes in accommodation or professional addresses.

All cars and their trailers must be insured in Portugal. Anyone who fails to comply with a motorbike or motor vehicle will be fined 500 to 2500 euros.
