Which Electric Scooters for Adults are Street Legal?
- May 21, 2018 -

Electric scooters have always been one of the favorite toys for children, but recently they are becoming more and more popular among young people, especially the millennials are looking for new ways to replace owning cars. The attraction of some electric scooters is that some of them are advertised for vehicles without permits and registration. But does that mean they are prohibited from entering the highway? So electronic scooters are called "street legal"? Are they classified as motorcycles, mopeds, scooters or other things? In the US, it is very confusing to understand what street electric motorcycles are and why they are not in the space of electric vehicles. In this article, we will try to explain this complex problem.

What does "street  legal" mean?

The term "street  legal" means a vehicle that can be legally driven on the street, which is consistent with all the requirements that are determined on the public road by the authorities. This usually means that vehicles need specific configurations of lighting, signal lights and safety devices to meet certain safety standards.

Trying to figure out whether a permit is required to operate your electric scooter on a public road is not as simple as you would like.

Since 2002, the federal law defines an electric bicycle as a "two or three wheeled vehicle with a fully operational pedal. When the motor is powered at a speed of only 20 mph, the maximum speed is reached, and the power of an electric motor is less than 750 watts (1.01 horsepower)." If the electric scooter belongs to this category, it is legal on the street and does not require permission and registration in most states. To meet these guidelines, some manufacturers have stepped on a pair of pedals on a car that looks more like Vespa, not like a motorcycle or a bicycle. This not only looks strange, but also makes the pedal very difficult, and in some cases it is virtually impossible. But if you are willing to overcome this, you will be allowed to ride on public roads at a maximum speed of 20 miles per hour without registration.

But if you ride a street electric bicycle that looks like a gasoline motorcycle, it may be difficult to convince your local police that it fits the legal definition of a bicycle. We know that several people have been fined for driving these vehicles without license, although it is fully legal in accordance with the law.
